- Title:
- Private Secretary: Registers and Indexes of Letters Received
- Scope & Content:
-
Bound volumes of registers and indexes of letters received by the Private Secretary to the Governor General. The letters themselves are found in the Private Secretary: Letters Received series at Mss Eur F699/1/2/2.
The pages of the register volumes are divided into the following columns: the number of each docketed letter or set of papers; the date the initial letter was written; the name, position and location of the sender; the subject of the letter; and the date of reply, cross references to other register entries, or comments such as to which department the letter or set or papers was transferred; letters or sets of papers intended for preservation are marked with a red cross in the ‘names’ column. (The same information for each number is also on each docketed letter or set of papers.)
Each index volume is divided into two parts: part A is an alphabetical index of the names of the writers of the letters, and part B is an alphabetical index of subjects to which the letters refer (for both parts, the entries do not follow in alphabetical order under each letter of the alphabet, rather they follow in the order of the numbers of the docketed letters or sets of papers under each letter of the alphabet). The index volume to ‘No. 5. Private Secretary’s Register Book from 1859 to 1860 Nos. 5913 to 7370 H.’ is missing.
