Three bound volumes containing copies of letters from the Private Secretary to the Governor General to numerous individuals. These letters are mostly replies to letters sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, concerning applications for posts, and other matters. [The related received letters are included in the folders which form the sub-series ‘Private Secretary: Letters Received’, Mss Eur F699/1/2/2, along with additional copies of the despatched letters included in this sub-series ‘Private Secretary: Copy Letters Despatched’ Mss Eur F699/1/2/3. File level catalogue records of the ‘Private Secretary: Letters Received’ Mss Eur F699/1/2/2 sub-series include descriptions of each letter received. Registers and indexes of letters received form the sub-series Mss Eur F699/1/1/1 ‘Private Secretary: Registers and Indexes of Letters Received’.]
Each letter despatched was assigned a running number, and the letters are entered into the volumes in number order. Entries for each letter include cross references to other copy letters despatched, letters received registered in the Private Secretary’s Register Books [see Mss Eur F699/1/1/1], and miscellaneous letters to the Governor General registered in the volumes ‘No. 1 Governor General[’]s Register of Letters Received from 1856 to 1858 No. 1 to 900’ [Mss Eur F699/1/1/1/29] and ‘No. 2 Governor General’s Register of Letters Received from 1858 to 1862. From 901.’ [Mss Eur F699/1/1/1/31].
Each volume of letters despatched includes a separate index enclosed in the volume. The letters are indexed alphabetically by the surnames of the individuals to which the letters were sent.
