Sketch material for ‘The Mask of Orpheus’ (opera in 3 acts with libretto and scenario by Peter Zinovieff; music composed between 1973-5 and 1981-3; premiered 1986 at the Coliseum, London, conducted by Elgar Howarth). The material includes diverse types of sketch, many of which relate to early compositional stages. Sketches are on various sizes and types of paper, and several sketches by Peter Zinovieff are included. Some pages for other works (‘Yan Tan Tethera’ and ‘…agm…’) were originally found amongst this material, and have been moved to files relating to these works; it is possible that some of the many unidentified leaves in this volume also relate to other works.
Further material for 'The Mask of Orpheus' can be found in the Harrison Birtwistle collection at the Paul Sacher Stiftung, including: 1100 leaves of sketches; fair copy of the score; photocopied typescript of the text.
