Collection of papers of the engineer and surveyor Arthur John Moore Bennett (1877-1950). The material consists primarily of a series of diaries and marine log books, and two series of memoirs, the first compiled in c.1922-27 and the second in 1939-40. The memoirs and other supporting material cover Moore Bennett's background, early life and experiences in England, and then move on to his travels around the world. He worked as an engineer and surveyor in Canada for the Canadian Pacific Railway (1897-99), moved to Australasia and South East Asia, before settling in China. He worked on the Lashio Yunnan Railway Survey (1904) and the Yunnan West River Survey (1912-13), before becoming Managing Director of the Anglo-Chinese Engineers Association Ltd (1915-20). After leaving China in the early 1930s Moore Bennett lived on board the yacht Medea which he had build, sailing around South East Asia and then the Mediterranean, before settling in Cyprus.
In addition to the memoirs, diaries, and log books are a number of miscellaneous papers, including files relating to the building of the yacht Medea, letters and articles written by Moore Bennett, and notebooks relating to archaeological surveys.

SOAS Library holds MS380582: Papers, 1925-1926, of Arthur J Moore-Bennett, comprising a letter to Sir Denison Ross concerning the site of Xanadu and publication of a manuscript by Moore-Bennett, 1926; offprint of Moore-Bennett's article, 'The Chahar Ruins of Kublai Khan's cities', China Journal of Science and Arts, vol iii, no 4 (Apr 1925), including photographs; typescript account, 1926, entitled 'Shand-Du: the pleasure city of Kublia [sic] Khan', of journey by Moore-Bennett and his wife from Peking to Shang-Du by the Imperial Route, including information on other Mongol camps and cities.
In addition, SOAS Library holds the archive of the China Association (CHAS). Articles and correspondence from Moore Bennett can be found in various copies of the Circular to the General Committee (Nos. 166, 182, 185, 186, 192 & 194) for the period 1914-15.
