Scope & Content:
The two surviving Naval and Marine files in the records of the Political Residency, Bushire both relate to the Royal Navy base at Jufair in Bahrain. The first file records the Admiralty decision to close the naval base at Henjam [Hengam] Island and to establish a new base at Jufair, with later papers relating to the acquisition of the site at Jufair, the issue of the payment of customs duties by the Royal Navy, and the payment of compensation to the owners of fish traps in the area (1935-39). The second file relates to the acquisition of land adjacent to the Jufair base for use as a wireless transmitter site (1944).

The Naval and Marine files of the Political Residency, Bushire are arranged by file and part number, by which for example, the reference 33/11 VI is composed of the subject reference 33 (Naval and Marine), the file number (11), and the part number (VI). There are only two surviving files under this subject reference: 33/11 VI and 33/11 VII. 33/11 VI also has the reference T 94 after it in brackets. This shows that the file also formed part of the 'Confidential' series held at the Residency, in which T stands for Naval.
