Title:: File XVIII: Coal Mining Rights and Monopolies
Scope & Content:: File XVIII: Coal Mining Rights and Monopolies consists of two files: volume XVIII/2 (IOR/R/15/6/23) and file XVIII/4 (IOR/R/15/6/24). The files contain correspondence dating from 1900 until 1928, which relates mainly to attaining coal and oil prospecting rights in Muscat and Oman. While the Sultan of Oman was in agreement with the British over their interest in coal and oil exploration in Oman, the Hanawi tribal confederation was against any British work taking place in the areas under the control of the Imam. Communications were made with Shaikh ‘Isa bin Salih al-Harthi, the representative of the Imam, in order for the British to gain permission to explore the areas under the Imam’s control. The majority of the correspondence is between the Consul and Political Agent, Muscat, the Political Resident in the Persian Gulf, Bushire, the Sultan of Muscat and Oman, and Shaikh ‘Isa bin Salih al-Harthi.
