Printed with some autograph annotations and corrections, and typewritten. Contains two loose leaf publishers’ proofs of Shakespeare and the Goddess of Complete Being with annotations and corrections and some variation between the two copies (Add MS 88918/6/9 and Add MS 88918/6/10).

Folders, Add MS 88918/6/7 and Add MS 88918/6/8 include two bound copies of advance proofs of the volume, one with additional autograph annotations and corrections by Hughes and one without; and five drafts of a letter beginning 'Dear Michael', which provide a brief guide to the volume, starting 'Here is a brief crib, to open my book and guide your eye to the essentials of the argument'. Drafts entitled 'Defining the Word 'Myth', 'A Working Definition of Mythic in Shakespeare And The Goddess of Complete Being' and 'A Letter To The Reader' (the latter of which is dated 15th May 1992), copies of 'Appendix III The Equation in the Merchant of Venice'; a review of the book by William Kerrigan (dated 24th January 1993); a photocopy of an article written by Hughes in response to a review by Eric Griffiths and a piece written in response to a review by John Carey entitled 'Single Vision and Newton's Sleep in John Carey' are also included. This folder contains some undated material.
