Mainly typewritten and printed, with some autograph material. The majority of the folders (Add MS 88918/16/5-9) contain photocopies of poems, some of which are arranged in paper enclosures. Add MS 88918/16/7 also contains sections of Seamus Heaney’s translation of Beowulf. The poems were presumably collected during the process of selection for the anthology. A note, which says 'School Bag - All Papers' is included among the copies.
Add MS 88918/16/3 contains an uncorrected proof of the poetry anthology, and Add MS 88918/16/4 contains annotated drafts of ‘Memorising Verse’ and ‘Afterword: Memorising Poems’ which Hughes wrote for the anthology (‘Memorising Verse’ also featured as an introduction in By Heart: 101 Poems to Remember (1997)). Autograph and typewritten drafts of ‘Sir Gawain and the Green Knight’ by Hughes marked as being ‘For Seamus Heaney for The School Bag' and some photocopies of poems for selection are also included (Further material relating to 'Sir Gawain and the Green Knight' can be found in Add MS 88918/1/55-56).
