- User Conditions:
- Administrative Context:
- The East India Company's medical men were first organized into a regular service in 1764 - they were always part of the military establishment and their primary duty was to serve the EIC (later Indian) Army though some were seconded to civil hospitals or held medical teaching appointments - a few filled non-medical posts eg as political officers. In 1773 the Company appointed a board in London to examine candidates for posts as assistant surgeons and thereafter most appointments to the service were made in the UK. For the first 80 years or so assistant surgeons, like officer cadets, were nominated by the Company's Directors but in 1855, following the India Act of 1853, the patronage system was replaced by one of entry through competitive examination. In 1873 the rank of Assistant Surgeon was abolished, and new entrants now joined with the rank of Surgeon. In 1892 the medical ranks of Surgeon, Surgeon Major, Brigade Surgeon etc were replaced by compound ranks (ie the title Surgeon plus combatant rank, eg Surgeon Lieutenant, Surgeon Captain etc). In 1898 the prefix Surgeon was discarded, and medical officers now held the same ranks as combatant officers. Meanwhile in 1897 the three separate divisions (Bengal, Madras, Bombay) had been combined into one general Indian Medical Service under the direct control of the Government of India.
