The list was issued at Calcutta by the Adjutant General of the Bengal Army (to 1865) and by the Military Department (1866-1889). Printers are named up to 1825 [1-4 Patrick Crichton, 5-8 & 12-18 Charles Silverton, 9-11 Andrew Dias], and between 1862 and 1866 publication rights were granted to the Bengal Military Orphan Society.

British Army units stationed in Bengal appear from December 1837; the Bengal Civil Service is included 1862-1880; War Services of British officers are given in the January issues from 1865 to 1882 and in every issue from 1883; War Services of Native officers appear in the January issues for 1888 and 1889. Various awards to European officers and men are recorded. (Awards not recorded in the Army Lists, e.g. Long Service and Good Conduct medals, can be found in General Orders IOR/L/MIL/17/5.) For Indian officers, awards of the Order of British India are recorded from December 1838, and for Indian officers and other ranks, awards of the Indian Order of Merit are recorded from March 1883. Complete lists of Indian officers of each regiment appear from October 1876.
