The list was compiled and published privately at Bombay, quarterly to 1879 and monthly from January 1880. Early printers 1825-1830 were Shreecrustna Jagonnathjee Prabhoo, Thomas Rigby and J.H. Bennett. From 1834 it was issued by the Courier Press (Telegraph & Courier Press from 1847) and from 1851 by the Bombay Education Society's Press. After 1857 the list was compiled in the Adjutant General's Office by permission of Government.

The Indian Navy appears in July 1838 and 1842-1862; the Hyderabad forces are in July 1838 and 1848-1857; the Civil List appears 1845-1884 and includes the Ecclesiastical Establishment from 1854. War Services, which also cover officers of British Army units, are given in every issue from October 1856 to October 1882, in the January issues for 1883-1884, and again in every issue from May 1884; they include native officers from July 1822. Various awards to European officers and men are recorded. (Awards not recorded in the Army Lists, e.g. Long Service and Good Conduct medals, can be found in the General Orders IOR/L/MIL/17/5.) For Indian officers, awards of the Order of British India are recorded from April 1851, and for Indian officers and other ranks, awards of the Indian Order of Merit are recorded from July 1890.
