The list, issued successively by the Government of India Military Department/ Army Headquarters India/Army Department Government of India/Defence Department Government of India, underwent several changes of title and frequency: The Quarterly Indian Army List for [month, day, year] Oct 1889-Jul 1901 The Monthly Indian Army List for [month, day, year] Sep 1901-Jun 1902 The Quarterly Indian Army List for [month, day, year] Jul 1902-Oct 1912 The Quarterly Indian Army List [month, year] Jan 1913-Jan 1923 The Indian Army List [month, year] ha yearly Apr 1923-1924; quarterly 1925-1931; half-yearly 1932-1934; quarterly 1935-Jan 1942; half yearly Jul 1942-1946 A separate 'Most Secret' quarterly version was issued in addition to the main series 1942-1943, and there was a special issue of the main list to mark the end of British rule in 1947.

War Services are a particularly valuable feature of the list and the volumes in which they appear or with which they were issued separately are marked here with an asterisk. After 1892 the war services of Indian Officers are included in January issues only, and in the Supplements from January 1902 to 1942. Various awards to European officers and men are recorded. (Awards not recorded in the Army Lists, e.g. Long Service and Good Conduct medals, can be found in the General Orders IOR/L/MIL/17/5.) For Indians, awards of the Order of British India (officers only) and the Indian Order of Merit, are recorded in the Indian Army Lists from October1889 to July 1919, though not in the April and October editions after April 1904. From January 1902 to January 1942, they appear in the Supplements. Awards of the Indian Distinguished Service Medal appear in the January and July editions from July 1907 to July 1919, and in the Supplements from January 1920 to January 1931. (Awards to Indian officers and other ranks not noted in the Army Lists may often be found in the Gazette of India IOR/V/11 and the Indian Army General Orders IOR/L/MIL/17/5.)
