- User Conditions:
- Administrative Context:
- By 1744, the amount advanced by the Company to the Crown had reached a total of £4,200,000. Interest at 4% per annum was being paid on £3,200,000 and at 3% per annum on £1,000,000. In 1750 the Crown gave notice that they proposed to reduce the rate of interest on the £3,200,000 to 3%. The Company agreed to accept the lower rate, provided that they were authorised to raise money by the sale of 3% annuities to the amount of the debt due from the public to the Company. The sum of £2,992,440-5-0 was raised, the dividends on which were paid at East India House. This amount, together with £1,207,559-15-0, the residue of the debt of £4,200,000, formed the East India Annuities which, by the Act 33 Geo III c.47 were placed under the management of the Bank of England and were engrafted onto the Three Per Cent Reduced Annuities. The main subscribers of the £2,992,440-5-0 were those who already owned short term bonds of the Company. In accordance with a decision of the Court of Directors on 25 Apr 1750 they received notice that on surrendering bonds, they would receive: one half of the amount of bonds surrendered - an annuity of 4% from Michaelmas 1750 to December 1751, 3 Ω% from then until December 1755, and 3% subsequently; on one quarter of the amount of bonds surrendered - an annuity of 3% from Michaelmas 1750; on the remaining one quarter - Company's bonds at 3%.
