TRUMBULL PAPERS. Vols. CXXXIII-CXLII. Minutes of despatches and letters, etc.; Sept. 1609-Sept. 1625. Drafts and fair copies. These consist largely of Trumbull's retained copies of communications that he addressed to successive Secretaries of State. They incorporate a number sent to James I during the period in which the King acted as his own Secretary, following the death of Salisbury. Miscellaneous items include sets of diplomatic instructions to Trumbull, 1612-1618, and copies of correspondence, etc., between James I and the Archdukes relating to the authorship of the libel Corona Regia and its suspected printer Christopher Flavius, Aug. 1615-May 1616. There is a gap in the sequence between Jan. and Sept. 1618, when Trumbull was on leave in England. Subsequent volumes include letters addressed to John Digby, later Earl of Bristol, 1621-1623, and a letter, with sign manual, of James I to the Duke of Savoy, 27 March 1622. A letter of Trumbull to the King, 25 April 1623, seeks the Provostship of Eton College, while another, dated 7/17 May 1624 and incorporating accompts, relates to his arrears of pay. A few stray minutes now form part of Add. 72425 below. The present arrangement, which follows that of the earlier bound volumes, derives from Trumbull himself, as is shown by autograph slips prefixed to each year or section. From 1615 minutes are increasingly annotated with date and addressee, and often with the name of the courier also. The names of the principal addressees are listed below under the indivdual volume-numbers. Documents predating 1619 are calendared by the Historical Manuscripts Commission, op. cit., vols. II-VI. A few of the letters to Sir Ralph Winwood were printed in Edmund Sawyer's Memorials of Affairs of State, vol. II (1725). Letters addressed to Trumbull by some of the Secretaries represented here survive among the Special Correspondence in section (1) above. For some letters to Edmondes represented below by drafts see Stowe MS 171. Many of Trumbull's despatches are preserved at the Public Record Office, among the State Papers, Flanders. Formerly Minutes I-V.
Ten volumes, arranged chronologically.
