The first of these two volumes, which are copied in a single hand, begins with a text of the Commons' 'Protestation' to James I of 20 June 1604, transcribed on leaves separately paginated as pp. 1-58, at the head of which is a note in the hand of Sir William Trumbull.

Paper: ff. [350 + 235]. 232mm x 202mm, and 318 x 200mm. Bindings of smooth marbled calf, with elaborately gilt-stamped spines. Main watermark in Add. 72467 arms of Seven Provinces, similar to W. A. Churchill, Watermarks in paper in Holland, England, France . . . (Amsterdam, 1935), no. 113 (dated 1675), countermarked with monogram of Pieter van der Ley (1665-1765). Watermark of Add. 72467 arms of Amsterdam, similar to Edward Heawood, Watermarks mainly of the 17th and 18th centuries (Hilversum, 1950), no. 431 (dated 1676). Pages ruled throughout in red. Each volume carries a separate contemporary pagination. Armorial bookplates of William Trumbull, son of Sir William, on paste-downs inside front cover, with shelf-marks in ink, originally '3.D.' altered to '3.B.'. Formerly Add. 27.
