TRUMBULL PAPERS. Vol. CCCIII. Legal commonplace book of Sir William Trumbull, under alphabetically arranged headings, relating to his practice as a civilian lawyer; 1670s-1680s. Mostly Latin and French. Interleaved with folios apparently in the hand of his father, William Trumbull II. The paper and ruling of the leaves are identical throughout and the contemporary pagination in the bottom righthand corners is continuous, but the contemporary foliation in the top lefthand corners is different for each of the two hands, indicating that the sheets were bound together from two different sequences of notes. There are two indexes of headings at the end, one in each hand. The volume originally contained many of Sir William Trumbull's loose notes, letters and case papers inserted at appropriate points between the leaves. Since these were too numerous to be fixed into the volume itself, they have been removed and bound separately in 72544 B, but in their original order and with a note of their original location. This is one of a series of legal commonplace books kept by Trumbull, nowly widely dispersed. Others are at the British Library, Add. MS 70590; Berkshire Record Office; Cambridge University Library; Grolier Club, New York (BL RP 22); and Osborn Collection, Yale University Library (BL RP 708/1, 3); see also RCHM, Annual Review 1989-1990, p. 26, 28; Principal Family and Estate Collections, I, p. 87. Purchased separately from Sotheby's, 18 July 1991, lot 394.
ff. , . A has a contemporary binding of reversed calf, with the remains of cloth ties. 355 x 220mm.
