Althorp Papers. Vols. mdxlvii-mdlxiv. Correspondence between the 5th Earl Spencer and W. E. Gladstone; 1866-1874, 1880-1902. Some of the letters are written on behalf of Gladstone by his private secretaries, E.W. Hamilton, 1873-1874 and 1880-1885, Horace Seymour, 1880-1885 and J. A. Godley, 1880-1882, with a few by other individuals. Included also are a small number of letters from Hamilton to Spencer not relating to Gladstone. Spencer's letters are copies, many autograph, with a few autograph drafts. Some are addressed to, or written on behalf of, Spencer by his private secretaries, Courtenay Boyle, John Dasent and Henry Yates Thompson. In addition, there are a number of memoranda, notes of conversations between Gladstone and Spencer, other notes, etc. For further correspondence between Spencer and Gladstone see the Gladstone papers, Add.
