Althorp Papers. Vols. mmxcix-mmcxviii. Correspondence of Spencer, his Private Secretary, W. Graham Greene, and other Admiralty officials with various individuals and organisations, including naval officers (excluding those in Section A above), servicemen and their representatives, Members of Parliament, and ministers and officials of other government departments; 1892-1895. A few letters are signed. Most of Spencer's letters are copies, a few of these being autograph, with a few of his autograph drafts. Included in this section are internal letters, notes or memoranda by Admiralty officials, in particular Greene. Much of the correspondence relates to particular cases, such as requests for patronage in connection with vacant posts, requests for discharge or promotion and injuries to dockyard workers. Petitions and other enclosed papers are found among some of these cases. See Section C for cases comprising a large number of letters and papers.
