HARDWICKE PAPERS. Vols. CXIII.-CXXXVII. Correspondence, chiefly diplomatic, of Robert Keith, Minister-Plenipotentiary at Vienna (1748-1757) and Envoy-Extraordinary at St. Petersburg (1757-1762), with a few private letters addressed to him after his retirement from the diplomatic service; 1748-1774. The principal writers are the Duke of Newcastle, the Earls of Holderness and Bute, and George Grenville, Secretaries of State, the Earl of Sandwich at Aix-la-Chapelle, Benjamin Keene at Madrid, Sir Charles Hanbury Williams at Dresden, William Bentinck and Joseph Yorke at the Hague, Lord Stormont at Warsaw, Sir John Goodricke and Walter Titley at Copenhagen, and Andrew Mitchell in Prussia. Drafts and copies of Keith's despatches are also included, together with a large number of copies of other letters and diplomatic papers. Twenty-five volumes. Vols. I.-XXI. contain letters and papers relating to the Embassy to Germany, including the negotiations which culminated in the Peace of Aix-la-Chapelle and those relating to the election of a King of the Romans. Vols. XXII.-XXV. relate to the Embassy to Russia, the last volume also including a few private letters and undated papers, among which (f. 131) is a character of the Empress Elizabeth.
