HARDWICKE PAPERS. Vols. CCCLIX.-CCCLXII. Official correspondence of Philip Yorke, 3rd Earl of Hardwicke, when Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, with Ministers of State; 1801- 1806. It consists chiefly of the official copies or holograph drafts of Lord Hardwicke's despatches and, in most cases, the original letters of Henry Addington, First Lord of the Treasury, March, 1801-May, 1804, his successor William Pitt till his death (23 Jan. 1806), and the following Secretaries of State for the Home Department, viz.: William Henry Cavendish-Bentinck, Duke of Portland, to 30 July, 1801, Thomas Pelham, Lord Pelham, July, 1801- Aug. 1803, Robert Banks Jenkinson, Lord Hawkesbury, May, 1804-Feb. 1806, and George John Spencer, Earl Spencer, Feb.- March, 1806. (For Lord Hardwieke's correspondence with the Hon. C. P. Yorke, Home Secretary Aug. 1803-May, 1804, v. above, 35,701-35,706.) In a strongly-worded letter to Pitt, 3 Feb. 1805 (35,710, f. 9), Lord Hardwicke, in consequence of Pitt's neglecting to attend to his letters, especially with regard to the conduct of Sir Evan Nepean, Chief Secretary, and to the delay in appointing a successor to the latter, talks of "appointing Lords Justices and returning to England"; and in July (ibid. f. 168) he requests "to be relieved by the appointment of another Lord Lieutenant." It was not, however, till 21 Nov. that Lord Powys was nominated. The latter's unwillingness to assume office and the death of Pitt delayed Lord Hardwicke's departure from Ireland till the end of March, 1806, when the Duke of Bedford was appointed in his place. Four volumes. Paper. Folio.
