HARDWICKE PAPERS. Vols. CCCLXXX.-CCCCXX. General Irish correspondence of Philip Yorke, 3rd Earl of Hardwicke, chiefly when Lord Lieutenant of Ireland (1801-1806); 3 Jan. 1801-June, 1815. Forty-one volumes. The early volumes consist largely of applications for appointments, pensions, and other rewards of loyalty submitted to Lord Hardwicke's predecessor Charles, Marquis Cornwallis, at the time of the Union; other subjects of correspondence are the outbreak in Dublin on 23 July, 1803, generally known as Robert Emmet's rebellion (of which there are several official reports), the constantly threatened arrival of French troops in Ireland to aid the rebels, and the ordinary details of the civil and military administration of the country. Many of the letters are addressed to the successive Chief Secretaries for Ireland, viz., Charles Abbot (May, 1801-Feb. 1802), William Wickham (Feb. 1802-Feb. 1804), and Sir Evan Nepean, Bart. (Feb. 1804-March, 1805), Alexander Marsden, Under-Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant (1801-1806), Sir Edward Baker Littlehales, Bart., Under-Secretary to the Military Department (1801-1806), and Lord Hardwicke's private secretaries, the Hon. and Rev. Charles Dalrymple Lindesay, D.D., in 1803 Bishop of Killaloe and in 1804 of Kildare (1801-1803), and Dugald Campbell (Oct. 1803- Mar. 1806).
