TRUMBULL PAPERS. Vols. CXLIV, CXLV. William Trumbull: Transcripts from his letter-books, etc.; 1609-1632. Copies, early 18th cent. Partly Latin and French. Some additional documents, headed 'Several things added by way of Appendix' and dated 28 Sept. 1615-20 Mar. 1631[/2] include copies of Trumbull's passports and diplomatic instructions, as well as commendatory letters on his behalf from foreign rulers.
Paper: ff. [ ]. 374 x 255mm. Watermark of bunch of grapes, with countermark 'PARU' within compartment. Binding of eighteenth-century smooth calf. The spines, gilt-stamped between six raised bands, formerly carried volume-numbers, now surviving only on 'Vol. I', and labels bearing titles now also wanting. The paste-down leaf inside the front covers carries a 19th-cent. armorial bookplate of 'William Trumbull Esqr.', along with the press-mark '3.F', later altered to '3.A' in a contemporary hand. The letters in each successive year are introduced by a half-title: in Vol. I the first of these, 'Minutes of Letters written to ye Secretaries of State, Ao: 1609', is followed by 37 unpaginated blank leaves, with pagination thereafter running from 78-248 only. Except for those belonging to the year 1610 all are transcribed in a single hand throughout, with occasional marginal annotations in the hand of Ralph Bridges (d. 1724) who contributed items of Trumbull's correspondence to Sawyer's Memorials of Affairs of State, 1725, and for whom see Add. 72495-72497 below. Formerly Add. 29.
Two volumes.
