Robert Arbuthnot, of the Ceylon Civil Service, writes to Lord Glenbervie about the Kandyan War, the death of Glenbervie's cousin Sylvester Gordon in Ceylon, and the deaths of many other Europeans from fever. To Lady Glenbervie he describes the Courts of Greater and Lesser Appeal. Lord Glenbervie's correspondence with Anthony Bertolacci includes a letter in which Glenbervie gives the news, 'generally believed', that Napoleon has been assassinated. Much of the correspondence with Bertolacci is in Italian.
