- Title:
- Correspondence of Lord and Lady Glenbervie with North
- Scope & Content:
- North writes to his sister about the shortcomings of British and Dutch society in the colony. He complains of reductions in government expenditure enforced by Lord Hobart, and ironically anticipates that the next Governor to be appointed will reverse all his (North's) measures. To his brother-in-law he writes about the progress of the pearl fishery, and about political negotiations with Kandy. He also writes in a letter of 18 June 1800 about the advantages to Great Britain of the Ionian Isles remaining independent or even coming under British control, and suggests himself as their Governor.
