Stuart (pp. 589-601, An Account of Stuart's Military Services); pp. 611-4, Directors to Madras Council 14th April 1779, Stuart, in recognition of past services, to be appointed Second in command to Hector Munro if acquitted by Court-martial. [Stuart's case was beautifully complicated. Firstly, he being a King's officer, it was difficult to arrange for a Court-martial or enquiry of any kind in India. Secondly, if the enquiry were transferred to England it would be difficult to arrange for the presence of the necessary witnesses. Thirdly, it was difficult to define the charges against him in a way which could make them cognizable by a military Court, and lastly, his offence in arresting Lord Pigot under the orders of the Majority in Council involved the question as to how far the authority of such a Majority extended.] (2) pp. 171-200, Admiral Hugh Pigot's request to the Directors 30th July 1778, to prosecute the Majority Members of the Madras Council who deposed and arrested Lord Pigot, with copies of the Attorney-General, Lord E.
