(5) pp. 455-60, Hugh Inglis to Henry Dundas 9th and 12th Oct. 1797 (Originals), Instructions relative to the Tanjore Succession should be sent through the Secret Committee. (6) pp. 463-79, William Blackburne, Resident, to Chief Secretary, Madras Government 27th April 1802, Death of Amir Singh, Raja of Tanjore, and death by Sati [Suttee] of two of his widows. In this case the Sati was absolutely voluntary, the ladies resisting the entreaties of their nearest relations and also the threats of officials. Nor was any attempt made by drugs of any kind to render them insensible to the pain of the fire. See a Letter to the Editor of the Asiatic Annual Register (Vol. IV, Misc. Tracts, p. 124), dated 16th Oct. 1802.
