- pp. 1-78, Letters from Bengal 31st Aug. 1796 to 27th Feb. 1802, pp. 79-108 Letters from Bombay 3rd Nov. 1798 to 14th Nov. 1803 and pp. 109-17 Letters from Court to Bengal 25th July 1798 to 8th Sept. 1800. Zaman Shah commenced his retreat from Lahore on 4th Jan. 1799 (see p. 55) owing to the revolt of his brother Muhammad (or Mahmud) Shah of Hirat, who had received the necessary assistance from the British Agent Mehdi Ali Khan under orders of the Governor-General. Mehdi Ali Khan, a Persian, had previously negotiated a favourable treaty between the British and the Imam of Muscat (see p. 75) and was appointed British Resident at Bushire (see p. 103). Governor Duncan's letter to Court 6th Aug. 1801 reports that Muhammad Shah had captured Zaman Shah and put out his eyes (see pp. 105-6).
