- Scope & Content:
- (1) pp. 1-145, Narrative of a Voyage to the North West Coast of America by James Strange, of the Madras Establishment, 1st Jan. to 15th Nov. 1786. This voyage was made under the patronage of David Scott (Chairman, 1796) in the ships Captain Cook (350 tons, Henry Lawrie, Master) and Experiment (150 tons, Guise, Master), the crews of both vessels being entirely European, with the object of discovering the possibility of establishing a Fur Trade with Nootka Sound, the capabilities of which place were described in Capt. Wedgbrough (of the Experiment) are to be found in A. Dalrymple's Charts, Vol. II, Nos. 214 and 218, also a drawing of Scott's Bay dedicated by Dalrymple to Scott for his public spirit in patronizing the expedition; pp. 9-13, Rules for the management of the ships; p. 17, Hotel life in Batavia; p. 30, Attack on H.M.S. Swallow (Capt. Carteret) by Celebes pirates in 1768; p. 44, Precautions against scurvy; pp. 59 et seq., Nootka Sound and Friendly Harbour. [As elsewhere in the history of the Company, the medical skill of a surgeon (Dr. Mackay) was a chief factor in establishing friendly relations with the natives.] (2) pp. 147-61, Additions to Capt. Cook's Vocabulary of the Nootka Sound Language.
