- The volume covers the seventeenth century. In his preface, dated 1 July 1823, Pratt states-"When a Collection of Historic Materials on the China Trade was made in 1821, to serve as a Basis for a Series of Papers to be laid before the Legislature, the Shortness of the Time given for preparing the Extracts did not admit of consulting all the Documents which might contain Information on the Subject, nor even of fully abstracting all the Original Letters and Journals relating to China and the neighbouring countries that were then discovered. The present Supplement is therefore intended to fill up the unavoidable chasms."
