Walpole, for Madras - Alum 350 pecul at 1½ tael per pecu;l Camphor 20 pecul at 25 tae;l China root 500 pecul at 2 tael; Gold 500 shoes of 9¾ tael weight, cost 51,855 tael; Sugar 3000 pecul at 3 tael; Sugar candy 250 pecul at 6 tael; Tea, Bohea 1000 pecul at 27 tae;l Tutenague 2500 pecul at 6 tael. Total cost of purchases, 359,811 tael. p.40 1 Nov 1722 Two days since the gunner's mate of the King George, coming up in the longboat, fired at a bird in the paddy ground, where a boy of about fifteen years of age was reaping and unfortunately received a mortal wound by a slug in the peice he fired. It being really an accident, we hope the Gentlemen Supra Cargoes will not meet with great difficulty in marking it up with the parents, as well as Mandarines, who too often vilely increase their personal estates by such misfortunes. p.43 15 Nov 1722 The China boy that was killed by gunner's mate of King George hath not only given Messrs Scattergood & Hill great trouble, but hath cost them already near 2000 tales, whereof the parents had 350, & though the gunner's mate is cleared in form, yet they now meet with great difficulty, for the Tituck, upon some pretence that the Toygen & Ninneham have concerted this business in prejudice to the honnour of the Emperor, threatens advising him thereof, so that the Hoppo will not deliver them their Grand Chop. Diary and consultations of John Savage and Edward Pratt, supercargoes of the Sir Robert Walpole (Capt Charles Boddam) 7 Dec 1721-12 Sep 1723 - after carrying a 1722 cargo to Madras, the Sir Robert Walpole returned to China and was at Canton again May-Sep 1723 before sailing for England. Official purchases: apart from 1000 pecul of Bohea tea from 'Quiqua', they contracted with 'Tonqua' for their total investment - Alum 300 pecul at 1.4 tael per pecul ;China root 500 pecul at 2 tael; Gold 30 shoes of 10 tael weight, cost 3000 tael ;Quicksilver 152 pecul at 42 tael; Silk, raw 60 pecul at 142 tael ;woven 2850 pieces, cost 17,552 tael - 1500 taffetas, 500 grograms, 250 plain poisees ,400 coloured poisees, 200 bed damasks; Sugar 1500 pecul at 2.8 tael; Sugar candy 1500 pecul at 5.8 tael ;Tea, Bohea 1500 pecul at 23 tael; Tutenague 2000 pecul at 6 tael; Vermilion 150 pecul at 42 tael. Total cost of purchases, 102,576 tael.
