The volume comprises correspondence, memoranda, notes, and other papers relative to the early years of the Bagdad [Baghdad] Residency. The majority of the volume consists of letters from Sir Harford Jones, Resident at Bagdad, to Henry Dundas, President of the Board of Control, with enclosures. The volume also includes précis of these letters, with an index, and other miscellaneous but related papers.
The volume covers a wide range of subjects connected to political events in Europe, Persia [Iran], the Arabian Peninsula, and Central and South Asia.

The first section, letters from Jones to Dundas, is arranged in chronological order, from the front to the back. The second section, the enclosures and what is referred to as the appendix, is arranged in approximate chronological order, from the front to the back. It begins with a list (folios 154-158) of appendices, each constituting a letter or similar document and given a number from 1 to 217. The third section, the précis, is arranged in approximate chronological order. The index is arranged alphabetically and refers to the page numbers of the précis.
