- Letters outward
- Scope & Content:
-
The volume consists of some letters outwards penned by David Anderson Blane, British Resident in the Persian Gulf. The principle recipients are Charles Norris, Chief Secretary to the Government of Bombay (in the Political Department); and John Pepper, Commander and Senior Officer of the Indian Navy in the Persian Gulf.
No subject is covered in great depth, though some of the subjects briefly mentioned include the ascendency of the Wahabees [Wahhabi] in Arabia under the leadership of Toorkee bin Saood [Turki bin Sa‘ūd]; the expulsion from Bushire of the Governor, Prince Reza Kooli Mirza; the Resident's concerns over the efficiency of the crews manning the ships of the Indian Navy stationed in the Persian Gulf; and the intention of Ubdulla ben Ahmed [‘Abdullāh bin Aḥmad Āl Khalīfah], Chief of Bahrein [Bahrain] to resist the Wahabee ascendency.
The file also includes a statement of imports into Bushire for the year 1832/33 (see ff 15-16).

- User Conditions:
- Physical Characteristics:
-
Foliation: The foliation sequence commences at the first folio with content (i.e. text) and terminates at the last folio with content; these numbers are written in pencil, and are located in the top right corner of the recto side of each folio.
Pagination: An original pagination sequence written in ink is present in the file between ff 1-16; these numbers are located in the top outermost corners of each page. There are a number of significant gaps in this sequence indicating that a degree of weeding has been undertaken in the past.
- Appraisal:
-
The volume is comprised of a subset of letters that would have originally been made up of over 150 pages. The remaining pages may have whole letters or sections of letters that have a large blue cross running from top to bottom through them. It has been determined that the cross indicates that the original reviewer did not wish these letters to be kept or considered.
It is not known who the original reviewer was, nor the criteria used to select material for retention.
