‘File 19/169 I (C 26) Relations Between Sunnis and Shi'ites in Bahrain’
Scope & Content:

A collection of letters that discuss relations between the Sunni and Shia communities in Bahrain. Specifically, the letters discuss a series of attacks on Shia villagers by Sunnis (including members of the Al Khalifa family), the difficulties involved in pressuring Shaikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa to hold those responsible to account and the role of the Al Khalifa family’s camel herd in exacerbating tensions between the two communities.

The file also includes discussion of the opposition to Shaikh Hamad’s rule from within his own family, the oppression of the Shia community and the possibility of sending an armed levy to Bahrain in order to help enforce Shaikh Hamad’s authority. The title page of the file states that the letters date from 21 Aug 1923 until 31 Dec 1928, however the latest letter contained in the file is from 12 July 1928.
