The volume contains letters sent and received by the Political Agency at Bahrain, the other Political Agencies in the Persian Gulf, the India Office in London and the Political Residency in the Persian Gulf, concerning the smuggling of arms and ammunitions from the Arab side of the Gulf into Persia.
The file also contains correspondence regarding:
- an Iranian law inflicting the death penalty on armed smugglers, passed in 1936, plus reports on individuals found guilty of smuggling and of the murder of two Persian brothers in Bahrain (ff 116-161);
- 'Report by Captain Howes on a visit to the Shibkuh ports', looking for visits of a submarine belonging to the Axis in 1943 (ff 164-172);
- incidents of theft of ammunitions, small arms ammunitions and petrol from RAF store in Sharjah in 1944, some of which later appear to have been sold into Qatar.
There is correspondence in Arabic with English translation, specifically with Shaikh ‘Abdullāh bin Jāsim Āl Thānī, Ruler of Qatar, concerning arms smuggling from Qatar, and requesting the Shaikh to invigilate on individuals suspected of smuggling.
