The file relates to the criminal conviction at Bahrain in September 1945 of Lieutenant-Commander Douglas R S Webster, Royal Indian Naval Reserve (RINR), who was based at the Royal Naval Base, Jufair [also spelled Juffair]. Douglas was sentenced to six months' rigorous imprisonment and a fine of 1000 rupees for an offence under Section 338 of the Indian Penal Code (causing grievous hurt by an act endangering life) and a fine of 500 rupees for an offence under Section 193 of the Indian Penal Code (intentionally giving false evidence in a judicial proceeding).
The file contains correspondence from the Political Agent, Bahrain (including Cornelius James Pelly, who acted as District Magistrate in the case); the Political Resident in the Persian Gulf; the Senior Naval Officer in the Persian Gulf; the Government of India; and the Superintendent, State Police, Bahrain.
The file also includes papers relating to Webster's appeal against sentence, October - November 1945, and papers relating to his repatriation, following release, from Bahrain to the United Kingdom via Bombay, December 1945 - January 1946.
