- Title:
- File 20/1 IV Slave Trade in the Persian Gulf
- Scope & Content:
-
The file contains correspondence related to the slave trade and slavery in the Gulf region.
A significant portion of the papers relate to allegations of slave trading into Qatar. In a letter dated 14 October 1945, Lady Kathleen Simon, a prominent representative of the Anti-Slavery Society, draws the attention of Lord Wavell, Vicerory of India in 1945, to allegations of slave trading in Qatar (folio 15). There are numerous letters in the file, sent between 1945 and 1949, from the Bahrain Political Agent to the Sheikh of Qatar, asking the latter to respond to allegations of slave trading in his dominions or by his subjects, some of which were acted upon and some of which were refuted.
The file also contains correspondence from 1948/49 between the Political Resident of the Persian Gulf (Lieutenant-Colonel Rupert Hay), Agents and officials at the Foreign Office, exploring proposals for a police force for the Gulf, similar to the Muscat Levy Corps (folios 208-13, 235-38).
