- File 32/2 (4/2) Liquor Control
- Scope & Content:
-
This file contains correspondence between British officials concerning the importation, consumption and licensing of alcohol (mainly referred to as liquor in file) in Bahrain.
Much of the correspondence is between the Political Agency in Bahrain and the Bahrain Petroleum Company (BAPCO) regarding the company's importation of alcohol for consumption by its employees. Some of this correspondence discusses accusations of misconduct on behalf of BAPCO employees while under the influence of alcohol.
The file also contains correspondence between the British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) and the Political Agency concerning regulations for the consumption of alcohol in its passenger bar.
The file contains two lists of liquor licence holders in Bahrain, one from 1940 (folio 53) and another from 1951 (ff 143-144).
Also enclosed are two letters (in Arabic and English) from the ruler of Bahrain, Shaikh Salmān bin Ḥamad Āl Khalīfah, to the Political Agency in which he raises concerns about the increase of alcohol consumption in the country, one from 1945 (folio 62) and another from 1950 (ff 92-98).
