This file contains correspondence related to a variety of topics grouped under the broad rubric of social legislation and legal reform. The correspondence is primarily between Charles Belgrave, Adviser to the Government of Bahrain; Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Geoffrey Prior, Political Resident in the Persian Gulf; and Hugh Weightman, Political Agent in Bahrain.
The topics discussed in the file include the recruitment of judges for employment in Bahrain, the creation of relief committees for the poor during the Second World War, employment conditions of the Bahrain Petroleum Company (BAPCO) and the movements of a Bahraini named Ali bin Khalifa al Fadhil who was banished from Bahrain for sedition in 1939.
The file contains two original letters in Arabic (with English translations) sent from al Fadhil to the Political Agency in Bahrain in which he pleads for leniency in his case (ff 108-109, 117-118). Also enclosed in the file are copies of the conditions for employment in Bahrain for BAPCO in both English and Arabic (ff 44-51).
