The file contains letters of complaint about matters connected to the Bahrain Government and its services, as well as correspondence between representatives of the government (usually Charles Dalrymple Belgrave, the Adviser to the government, and Claud Cranbrook Lewis DeGrenier, Director of Customs and Port Officer), the Political Agent, Bahrain, and the Political Resident in the Persian Gulf.
The letters of complaint are mostly from former government employees, but also include employees of companies such as Gray, Mackenzie and Company Limited and the Bahrain Petroleum Company (BAPCO), and local merchants. The complaints are concerned with a range of matters, such as the following:
- wrongful dismissal;
- inadequate policing;
- short notice periods;
- unjust treatment by superiors;
- high taxes and import duties;
- harsh sentencing in Bahrain courts;
- restrictions on travel;
- inadequate compensation for injury suffered at work;
- refusal of land registration;
- termination of tenancies;
- accusations of blackmail;
- withholding of provident fund contributions.
In addition, the file contains correspondence connected with the closure of the Taj Mahal Hotel in Manama due to insanitary conditions, including that from the proprietors, C. Kumar Brothers.
Some correspondence relating to payments of compensation and refunds is also included in the file.
Folio 164 is an Eastern Bank Limited bank draft, dated 25 October 1943.
Folios 224-246 are internal office notes.
