- Scope & Content:
- The file comprises correspondence exchanged between the Political Resident in the Persian Gulf (Lieutenant-Colonel William Rupert Hay) and the Political Agent at Bahrain (Lieutenant-Colonel Arnold Crawshaw Galloway) on the prospect of establishing a seamen’s club and hostel at Bahrain. Included with one letter from Hay, dated February 1947, is a note relating to a conversation between Hay and the Reverend A D White, British Chaplain for Basra and the Persian Gulf and Port Chaplain for the Mission to Seamen. The main points covered in the letters include: the prospects of the Bahrain Petroleum Company (BAPCO) financing and establishing a seamen’s club at Bahrain; possible amenities to be offered at a club; risks associated with allowing seamen access to Bahrain Island; the possible involvement of the Seamen’s Mission in the venture.
