‘File 13/5 A REGISTRATION OF BIRTHS IN IRAQ’
- Scope & Content:
-
The file contains correspondence between the Political Agent, Bahrain; the Political Resident in the Persian Gulf, Bahrain and the Consular Section of the British Embassy, Baghdad.
The correspondence concerns a request made by a Jewish resident in Bahrain, who was emigrating to the United States of America. This man could not provide birth certificates for his parents to the American authorities, because they had been born in Iraq under Turkish rule. After making enquiries, The British Agency in Bahrain was able to provide him with an official letter, confirming that there had been no system of formal registration for the birth, death and marriage of Jews in Iraq, under Turkish rule.
