Correspondence relating to requests for assistance received at the Political Agency, from individuals not employed by or associated with the British Government. A large proportion of the requests come from Indians employed in Bahrain who, as British subjects, request assistance in various matters from the Political Agent. The file’s principal correspondents are the Political Agent in Bahrain; the Adviser to the Bahrain Government (Charles Dalrymple Belgrave); the Ruler of Qatar (Shaikh ‘Abdullāh bin Jāsim Āl Thāni).
The file includes:
- a request in 1944 for medical and other supplies from the Ruler of Qatar, Shaikh ‘Abdullāh bin Jāsim Āl Thāni, in response to a fever epidemic in Qatar, the consequent difficulty in sourcing the supplies in Bahrain, and the eventual delivery of the supplies by Bliss & Company of Karachi;
- various requests sent to the Political Agency by individuals, who are concerned, during wartime, of the whereabouts of family members understood to be residing or employed in Bahrain or the wider Gulf region;
- requests for assistance from individuals requiring repatriation, including those on medical grounds;
- requests for assistance from individuals requiring financial assistance, and those involved in disputes relating to wills, dowries, employment contracts, financial transactions;
- correspondence from military pensioners in Bahrain, concerning the right to free education for the children of military servants, offered by the Government of India.
The file contains file notes for a file that is no longer part of the Miscellaneous subject files, the original external reference of which (as indicated on the first sheet of the file notes) was File 16/28 IV (ff 215-247).
