- Title:
- File A/2 IV Correspondence regarding slaves and their manumission certificates
- Scope & Content:
-
The file contains correspondence and papers related to individual manumission cases heard by the Political Agency at Muscat. The Agency at Muscat sent details of each case, including copies of the slaves' manumission statements, to the Bahrain Agency (eg. folios 1B, 2). In turn, in those cases where the slave in question had absconded from the Trucial Coast, the Bahrain Agency requested the Residency Agent at Sharjah to enquire into the validity of the slave's story (folio 3). On occasion, the Residency Agent at Sharjah wrote to the one of the Sheikhs of the Trucial Coast, making enquiries into the slaves or the owners of those slaves residing in their dominion (eg. folio 64). Correspondence from the Residency Agent is in Arabic with accompanying English translations (eg. folios 7-10). The office notes for each case, absent from the first half of the file but more common in the second half, record the reasons on the part of Bahrain Agency staff for granting manumission (eg. folio 129).
