- Title:
- File A/2 (4A II) Slavery: cases received from Muscat for investigation
- Scope & Content:
- The file contains correspondence related to two manumission cases originating with the Political Agency in Muscat. Case number 1 is a straightforward case (folios 6-12) involving a male slave who has absconded to Muscat, and includes a copy of the manumission statement sent by the Muscat Agency to the Bahrain Agency for approval (folio 8). Case number 2 involves the abduction of a woman and two daughters by a Kalba inhabitant (folios 13-30). Correspondence relayed from the Bahrain Political Agent (Lieutenant-Colonel Arnold Crabshaw Galloway) to the Shaikh of Kalba via the Sharjah Agent seeks to recover sufficient finance from the alleged kidnapper to enable the relatives of the abducted women to buy their freedom. As the alleged kidnapper has moved to Fujairah and is described by the Shaikh of Fujairah as being in 'bad financial circumstances', the Bahrain Agent requests that the Shaikh of Fujairah bear the costs for securing the release of the kidnapped women (folios 22).

- Physical Characteristics:
-
Foliation: the foliation sequence (used for referencing) commences at the front cover with 1, and terminates at the inside back cover with 31; these numbers are written in pencil, are circled, and are located in the top right corner of the recto side of each folio.
- Custodial History:
- Vernacular File normally kept in the English Office.
- Former External References:
- Vernacular Files: A/2 (4A II)
- Arrangement:
- The file is arranged by slavery case, and contains two cases. Case number 1 starts on folio 6, while case number 2 begins on folios 13. Folios 1-5 are reserved for index pages, with folio 2 listing the names of the slaves involved in the two cases in the file. Within each case, correspondence has been arranged in chronological order.
- Administrative Context:
- In the 1940s, incidences of kidnapping and slavery that were reported to the political agencies on the Arab coast (Sharjah and Muscat) were referred to the Political Agent in Bahrain for action and approval. British policy was to seek redress or restorative action from the shaikhs or rulers of those regions where the kidnapper or slave owner resided, particularly when there was a long-standing anti-slavery treaty in place between the town/tribe and the British Government [full details of historic treaties in Aitchison's Treaties and Engagements Relating to Arabia and the Persian Gulf, reprinted 1987].
