- Title:
- File A/2 (4 II) Slavery: cases reported by British Agency, Sharjah
- Scope & Content:
-
The file comprises correspondence and papers related to 115 manumission applications, made by slaves to the Residency Agent at Sharjah between 1947 and 1950. The manumission applications have been grouped together into thirteen cases, meaning that batches of manumission statements (in English and often in Arabic) were sent by the Residency Agent in Sharjah to the Bahrain Political Agency for approval. These batches could comprise as many as twenty manumission applications at a time. All cases in the file are straightforward, in that manumission was approved by Bahrain Agency staff in return correspondence. Most of the applications made are by slaves (both male and female) between the ages of twenty and forty years old who were born slaves, and native to the towns of the Trucial Coast.
