- Title:
- File A/10 II Trading in slaves on the Trucial Coast
- Scope & Content:
-
The file contains correspondence and other papers, sent to the Political Agency in Bahrain, relating to thirty-three manumission applications and six applications for the restoration of enslaved relatives, heard by the Residency Agent at Sharjah ('Abd al-Razzaq Razuqi). Each of the manumission cases includes a copy of the slave’s manumission statement, along with covering letters, and confirmation of manumission from the Agency. Some of the applications for the restoration of relatives involve cases in which daughters, wives, or whole families had been abducted or deceived into slavery. In these cases, statements were made to the Residency Agent by the enslaved persons’ relative(s), and correspondence exchanged between the Residency Agent and the ruler of the place in which the abductees were captured (e.g. Ajman, Sharjah), in a coordinated attempt to trace the relatives.

- Arrangement:
-
Most of the correspondence and other papers in the volume have been arranged on a case-by-case basis, with each case representing either a single reported incident of slave trading or one or more applications for manumission. The cases are arranged in chronological order, from the earliest reported case at the front of the file, to the latest at the rear. Within each case, correspondence and other papers have been arranged in a rough chronological order, which is likely based on when they were received or sent by staff at the Bahrain Agency.
The file begins with each case being numbered, and having a cover sheet and accompanying office notes. However, as the file progresses, case numbers, cover sheets and office notes are all increasingly disregarded.
