The volume contains accounts, and correspondence received by Lieutenant-Colonel Patrick Campbell, HM Consul-General and the East India Company’s Agent in Egypt at Alexandria, dated 5 February 1838-30 June 1869. The papers relate to events in Egypt and the Red Sea, and include:
- Tabulated schedules for the current account of the East India Company with Lieutenant-Colonel Campbell and Captain John Lyons, the Agent of the East India Company in Egypt
- Tabulated schedules for the current account of the Council for Government [of India] with the Agent in Egypt
- Tabulated schedules for travelling expenses and associated disbursements (in imperial dollars and dollars) from and to the following places: Alexandria, Cairo, Suez, Atfeh [Atfih, also known as Aphroditopolis], Jeddah [also written as Juddah], Mocha, Aden, Point de Galle, and Madras [Chennai]
- Tabulated schedules for salaries (in pounds and piastres) paid quarterly for named British officers, as well as unnamed 'Arab' messengers and Janissaries (members of Ottoman élite infantry units)
- Details of gifts presented to Mohomet Ali Pasha [Muḥammad ʿAlī Pāshā], the Ottoman Governor and later independent ruler of Egypt, his courtiers, and staff, as well as the Wakeel [wakīl, 'attorney' or 'representative'] of Abbass Pasha [ʿAbbās Pāshā ibn Ṭūsūn Pāshā ibn Muḥammad ʿAlī Pāshā], during the visit in 1844 of the newly appointed Governor-General of India, the Earl of Dalhousie, on his way to India.
