The volume contains accounts, and correspondence received by Lieutenant-Colonel Patrick Campbell, HM Consul-General and the East India Company’s Agent in Egypt at Alexandria, dated 1 January 1838-31 December 1869. The papers relate to events in Egypt and the Red Sea, and include:
- Tabulated schedules for the current account of the East India Company with Lieutenant-Colonel Campbell, Captain John Lyons, the Agent of the East India Company in Egypt, and Captain H Johnson, the Packet Agent, later Deputy Packet Agent, of the East India Company at Alexandria. The schedules are signed by: Johnson; Robert Thorn, the Assistant Packet Agent; and C W Betts, the Agent at Alexandria
- Tabulated schedules for travelling expenses and associated disbursements (in imperial dollars and dollars) from and to the following places: Alexandria, Cairo, Suez, Atfieh [Atfih, also written as Atfe, known as Aphroditopolis], Neghela [Nujila (?), also written as Najalee, Nagalu, and Nagalee], Valetta, Pera [Beyoğlu], Malta, Gibraltar, Marseilles, Southampton, Calcutta [Kolkata], Bombay [Mumbai], Madras [Chennai], Indie [India, that is, South Asia], China, and Hong Kong
- Tabulated schedules for salaries (in pounds, piastres, and Egyptian piastres) paid quarterly for named British officers and Janissaries (members of Ottoman élite infantry units), as well as payments for hiring animals (such as donkeys, dromedaries, camels) and the purchase of fuel (such as coal) for transport
- Bills addressed to the East India Company for provisions, beverages (including ale, beer, rum, brandy, milk, coffee, and tea), and accommodation
- Details of gifts presented annually on the celebrations of Bairam [bayrām, a Turkish term for the Islamic feasts or ʿīdayn] to members of the Government of Egypt by order of the Agent.
The primary correspondents are: HM Consul-General and the East India Company’s Agent in Egypt; the Agent of the East India Company in Egypt; the Packet Agent, later Deputy Packet Agent, of the East India Company at Alexandria; the Assistant Packet Agent; the Agent at Alexandria; Samuel Shepheard, proprietor of Shepheard's British Hotel, Cairo; staff of the Hôtel Peninsulaire et Oriental, Alexandria; F J R Hill and Company; and Messrs Briggs and Company.
The volume includes a document in French on folio 636.
The volume is erroneously dated '1838-39' on the spine.
