Title:

Collection 269/193 'Miscellaneous Questions. Anglo-Persian Agreement: Report of Military Commission. Loan of Officers.'

Scope & Content:

The file contains correspondence between officials at the War Office and the India Office. It concerns a request for the loan of British Indian Army officers to the Persian [Iranian] Army, and the conditions of service offered to these officers.

The file also contains a copy of the ‘Report of the Anglo-Persian Military Commission’ and the ‘Confidential Supplement to the Report of the Anglo-Persian Military Commission by the British Members’. The Report gives an overview of potential internal and external military threats to Persia, and a review of: Persia’s existing armed forces; its military institutions and laws; its existing communications and agricultural fertility; and its financial situation. The Confidential Supplement contains further observations and recommendations from the British members of the Commission. These include comprehensive recommendations for the structure, recruitment, training, maintenance, equipping, and administration of a reformed Persian military.
