This file concerns the finances, equipment, and role of British armed forces in India. It contains:
- A despatch from the Government of India, Army Department to Edwin Montagu, Secretary of State for India, dated 22 March 1919. The despatch examines the strategic requirements and costs of armed forces in British India, in particular the question of maintaining and financing troops in readiness for deployment outside India (including in Persia [Iran], Mesopotamia [Iraq], Egypt, Palestine, former territories of the Russian Empire, and the Pacific). The despatch includes appendices with tables displaying past, current, and proposed Field Army and internal security units in India, and a report on the possibility of establishing a reserve army.
- Correspondence and minute papers from the Secretary of State for India, the Viceroy of India, and India Office officials, particularly in the Military and Finance Departments, dated 27 August 1919-17 March 1920. This correspondence concerns: military equipment, in particular for forces on the North West Frontier; military expenditure; and the readiness of British forces in India for war with an external power.
